Incredible that a series based on 1983 novel that discusses the themes of chess, feminism and drug addiction feels very relevant even today.
Anya Taylor brings Beth Harmon to life with her childishness and vulnerability. Beth feels loneliness throughout her life, filling it with drugs in the series. But the unconditional love towards her shown by her Mom, Jolene, Shaibel, Benny, Beltik even her Russian opponents makes it a heartwarming watch. Limited series that didn’t have many characters, but the few characters that exist in this universe really leave a lasting impression. Her boyfriends , her companions in school, mom all have amazing arcs and cast did a good job portraying them.
Success of the series lies in making you feel that playing chess is cool and wanting to play one after you complete the series!
“Chess isn’t always competitive. Chess can also be beautiful. It was the board I noticed first. It’s an entire world of just 64 squares. I feel safe in it. I can control it. I can dominate it. And it’s predictable, so if I get hurt, I only have myself to blame.” – Beth Harmon
